NMC brings 3,000 new properties under tax net

As per the norms, it is mandatory for the builders to obtain building completion certificates (BCCs) from the civic body after the completion of the buildings.

The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has brought 3,000 additional properties under the tax net over the past two months, bringing in revenue of Rs 4.5 crore.

As per the norms, it is mandatory for the builders to obtain building completion certificates (BCCs) from the civic body after the completion of the buildings.

The civic body levies property tax on the building after the issuance of the BCCs. However, in this case, the builders had not obtained the BCCs of the buildings and instead gave possession of flats to the customers. NMC teams found that people residing in such buildings had not been paying property tax.

The NMC administration has started a drive this year, and so far, 16,000 such properties have been brought under the tax net. This drive is a part of measures to bring properties under the tax net and increase the revenue of the civic body.

With the addition of these new 16,000 properties, the number of properties NMC collects tax from in the city has touched 5 lakh.

At present, over 2,000 building projects with more than 50,000 flats are under construction in the city and the projects are expected to be completed in the next two years. This means the civic body is expecting the same number of properties to be brought under the tax net over the next two years.

NMC officials said that they will continue to identify the new properties across six divisions which are immediately to be brought under the tax net.

During the last financial year (2021-22), the NMC had collected property tax amounting to Rs 150 crore, which was the highest ever property tax collection by the civic body since its establishment.
