The civic officials took action against illegal structures in the city on Thursday. They razed as many as five buildings at Ferozepur Road near Vishal Mega Mart for violations. Some other illegal units were also demolished on the same day.
Notably, contempt of court had been filed in the Punjab and Haryana High Court against municipal corporation (MC) for not removing the illegal structures before. As per Punjab Urban Planning and Devlopment Authority Act, any kind of commercial and residential accommodation (after 1995) should be constructed at distance of 5 meters from the main roads and if the same is not followed, the said constructions should be demolished.
Apart from this, action was taken against a few other illegal structures in various areas. The officials razed unauthorized shops in Zeenath Colony in Jassian. Another encroachment was removed from the streets of Sandhu Nagar.
The ongoing constructions in a building in Model Town and one unauthorized shop at Barewal Road were demolished too by the MC.
The building inspector, while confirming the action, claimed that illegal structures at national highway as well as in other parts of the city were removed.
