Maharashtra cabinet approves ₹1,000 stamp duty for Nagpur smart city-hit homes

In a significant development for beneficiaries impacted by the Nagpur Smart City initiative, the Maharashtra cabinet has granted a substantial reduction in stamp duty fees for residences assigned under the ‘Home Sweet Home’ rehabilitation program. The meeting was presided over by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

According to the resolution, a nominal fee of Rs1,000 will be imposed for the registration of lease agreements for 28 homes designated in Mouza Punapur for families displaced by the Smart City project. Previously, the stamp duty for these registrations was projected to be between Rs40,000 and Rs45,000, which represented a considerable financial burden for low-income beneficiaries.

The beneficiaries had been advocating for a decrease, referencing the precedent established under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), which charged a minimal stamp duty of Rs1,000. Acknowledging this request, the state government has now extended the same concession to the 28 residences built for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) in Mouza Punapur.

These homes were allocated as rehabilitation for individuals whose original properties were acquired for the Smart City infrastructure development in Nagpur. This initiative is anticipated to alleviate the financial pressure on the affected families and streamline the registration process, allowing them to obtain legal ownership of their new residences.
