In an attempt to prevent citizens buying flats that have been constructed without KMC sanction, the civic brass has decided to list all unauthorized buildings located across the city and publish it on the civic body’s website.
Mayor Firhad Hakim on Saturday asked municipal commissioner Binod Kumar to take a prompt and effective step in this direction. Hakim took such a decision after he received a call from a south Kolkata resident who helplessly pleaded to save the building from demolition as she bought the flat seven years ago unaware of the fact that the building was constructed without the civic body’s sanction.
Apart from publishing a list of city’s unauthorized buildings on the KMC website, the civic brass will send the list to the state land and land revenue department to ensure that under no circumstances registration is done. “We will send the list to the state government to stop registration of the illegal buildings,” said Hakim. At the same time, the mayor warned the civic body’s buildings department officials against any lapse in identifying the illegal structures in their respective jurisdiction. “We won’t spare any official, who will turn a blind eye to construction of unauthorized buildings,” said Hakim.
According to a KMC official, with the number of unauthorized constructions rising in several city areas, particularly in the added areas like Behala, Garden Reach, Tollygunge-Jadavpur belt and vast stretches located off EM Bypass such as Nayabad, Patuli, Mukundapur, Anandapur, Madurdaha, it was becoming an uphill task to locate the illegal structures.
“We will send our inspectors to these areas who will take stock of the under construction buildings that have no KMC permit. After completion of the list we will add these unauthorized structures to the old list and publish them on our website to warn prospective flat buyers against the fraud,” said the KMC buildings department official. Sources said the civic body had started preparing a list of unauthorized buildings that will need to be razed as ordered either by courts or the judges of the KMC buildings department tribunal.
