The city corporation has started receiving applications for collecting property taxes from the newly-constructed buildings after a gap of nearly six months. The process was put on hold in April.
The civic body had revised the property tax at the beginning of the current financial year based on the state government’s instructions.
While it started collecting the revised property taxes for the existing buildings from July first week, it could not initiate the same for the new buildings as the process to zone them into A, B, C and D categories was underway.
While the city corporation collects property tax under 16 slabs based on the areas, the zoning was done to simplify taxes for the newly-constructed buildings.
As per the zonation, commercial streets and bus routes fall into A category, main roads fall into B category, roads branching out from the main roads fall into C category and interior areas and slums fall into D category.
Corporation commissioner M Prathap said they started receiving the applications for property tax for the new buildings from Tuesday, as the zonation work was over. “People can approach the zonal offices and submit applications.”
He said they had received around 50 petitions seeking reclassification after releasing the list of streets under each zone.
“We scrutinized them and found most of the petitions were reasonable. Appropriate modifications were made accordingly. Only a few petitions could not be entertained. For instance, there was a petition seeking a part of RS Puram to be brought under C category. It was unjust and could not be entertained.”
Another corporation source said the rates adopted by the council for all the four categories have been changed. “Details will be shared after getting it cleared at the council meeting.”
