Dragging method being used for underground Kanpur metro station

‘Tatya’ the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), was ‘dragged’ up to 215 metres from one end to the other in the under-construction Naveen Market underground Metro station using the ‘dragging’ method.

In the coming days, the TBM will be launched for the downline underground tunnel construction till Bada Chauraha.

Under the Corridor-1 of the Kanpur Metro Rail Project (IIT-Kanpur to Naubasta) TBM was on Sunday dragged and positioned on the other end of Naveen Market underground station of Chunniganj-Nayaganj underground section with the help of ‘Dragging’ method. This work was completed in a short span of just 12 days.

The ‘Tatya’ Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) reached Naveen Market on July 10 after constructing a 750-metre (approx.) tunnel on the downline from Chunniganj. After reaching Naveen Market, the next challenge was to transport it from one end to the other end of the 215-metre-long under-construction underground Metro station so that it could be launched further to Bada Chauraha for tunnel construction. For this work, the engineers of Uttar Pradesh Metro used the ‘Dragging’ method.

TBMs are usually not dragged from inside an underground Metro station but are retrieved out of a retrieval shaft at one end of the station and re-launched from a launching shaft at the other end. But the use of the ‘Dragging’ method helped in saving the time taken in this process of retrieving and lowering the machine back to the ground.

The civil engineers of Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) had already completed the construction of the base level at Naveen Market underground Metro station for this process. After this, the entire Tunnel Boring Machine on the cradle was dragged from one end to the other using a hydraulic jack.

About 516-metre tunnel will now be constructed on the downline to Bada Chauraha by Tatya Tunnel Boring Machine.

It is worth mentioning that in about 4 km long Chunniganj-Nayaganj underground section, ‘Nana’ and ‘Tatya’ Tunnel Boring Machines have already completed the tunnel construction work on both the lines of about 1025 metres between Bada Chauraha to Nayaganj and about 750 metres between Chunniganj to Naveen Market.

Nana Tunnel Boring Machine was launched on July 15 for underground tunnel construction up to Bada Chauraha on the up-line.
