Design and Construction of a Deep Diaphragm Wall in Challenging Soil Conditions

UCON Structures LLP has been awarded the Design & Build contract for constructing a diaphragm wall for Amara Foundations at St. Mary’s Road, Chennai. The project posed significant engineering challenges due to poor soil conditions, excavation depth, and restrictions on using conventional anchoring methods. The N value of the soil was very low, indicating weak strata, which necessitated an innovative structural approach. To ensure stability, a two-layer strutting system was adopted instead of inclined anchors.

The project is situated in a prime locality of Chennai, where space constraints limit construction flexibility. The presence of existing buildings required a design that can minimize disturbance to adjacent structures.

A star hotel adjacent to the site imposed restrictions on using inclined ground anchors, which are typically employed for lateral support in deep excavations.

The soil at the site exhibited low N-values, indicating poor bearing capacity and necessitating a deeper diaphragm wall.

The design had to incorporate the building’s permanent piles as part of the strutting system. This required precision in aligning temporary supports with the long-term structural elements.

Faced with low N-value soil and site constraints, a tailored approach was essential to ensure structural stability. Advanced design and execution strategies were implemented to optimize excavation and support systems.

  • Optimized Diaphragm Wall Design: Due to the low N-value of the soil, the diaphragm wall depth was extended to 28 meters, countering soil instability and lateral earth pressures.
  • Customized Strutting System: A two-layer strutting arrangement was implemented instead of inclined anchors. The permanent piles of the building were strategically used as support points, reinforced with bracket connections.
  • Sequential Strutting and Excavation: Structural steel struts were installed in phases, allowing excavation to progress smoothly while maintaining stability. Each phase was executed meticulously to prevent any risk of soil movement or structural failure.
  • Diaphragm Wall Construction – Excavated and concreted the diaphragm wall up to 28m depth.
  • Bracket and Strut Installation – Fixed brackets on permanent piles and installed structural steel struts for support.
  • Excavation to 11m EGL – Excavated while maintaining structural stability.

This project exemplifies how innovative geotechnical design and strategic structural interventions can successfully address complex foundation challenges in urban environments. UCON Structures LLP’s expertise in diaphragm wall construction and adaptive engineering solutions played an important role in delivering a stable and efficient foundation system under demanding conditions.

By leveraging technical expertise and market-driven strategies, UCON Structures LLP has advanced as a key player in geotechnical services, particularly in diaphragm wall construction. Its growth reflects a commitment to excellence, driving long-term progress and impact in the industry.
