The Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) on Wednesday sealed seven shops in Koyambedu market for failing to renew their licences.Since October, the CMDA has sealed a total of 60 shops for non-renewal of licences.
The Koyambedu wholesale market is operated by the Market Management Committee which is responsible for overseeing the renewal of shop licences every three years, as mandated by the Tamil Nadu Specified Commodities Markets (Regulation of Location) Act, 1996. However, many shops have not renewed their licences since 1996.
“We identified seven shops that did not renew their licence between 2021 and 2024. We sealed them after serving reminders,” said a CMDA official.According to the official, this marks the seventh phase of the drive. “Till now we have sealed 39 vegetable shops, nine fruit shops and 12 flower shops in the Koyambedu wholesale market. The action will continue,” the official added.
