Chandigarh Sets Record For Highest Property Tax Collection During Rebate Period

Chandigarh’s Municipal Corporation has collected the highest annual property tax during the rebate period for the fiscal year 2024-25.  The total property tax collected during this period reached Rs 52.24 crore, marking a 21 percent increase compared to the previous year’s collection of Rs 43.21 crore. This new record surpasses the collections of previous years: Rs 46.57 crore (2022-23), Rs 24.84 crore (2021-22), Rs 0.23 crore (2020-21), and Rs 31.55 crore (2019-20).

Municipal Commissioner Anindita Mitra praised the tax collection team and highlighted the civic responsibility of the city’s residents and businesses. She noted that this record-breaking achievement will enable the MC to further enhance Chandigarh’s infrastructure, public services, and overall development. The MC is dedicated to using these resources responsibly and transparently, aiming to transform Chandigarh into a model of sustainable urban development and improve the quality of life for all residents.

The MC actively engaged with taxpayers to educate them about the property tax system and the benefits of timely payments. Campaigns were launched to promote the rebate available for prompt payments, encouraging residents and businesses to settle their dues during the designated period. The MC made the property tax assessment and collection processes more efficient and user-friendly. Collaboration with relevant government departments further facilitated smooth information exchange and effective tax collection.

For the fiscal year 2024-25, taxpayers who settled their property tax dues between April 1 and May 31 were eligible for a rebate. This program offered a 20 percent discount on residential property taxes and a 10 percent discount on commercial property taxes. After the rebate period, a 25 percent penalty and a 12 percent interest charge are applied to unpaid dues.

Chandigarh’s record-setting property tax collection isa a testament to effective governance and the civic-mindedness of its residents. The strategic initiatives by the MC have not only increased revenue but also paved the way for enhanced public services and infrastructure development.
