Chandigarh civic body’s general house approved to sell properties on freehold

The matter will be sent to the UT administration for formal approval to the conversion to dispose of the properties not being sold for past over a decade despite multiple attempts owing to their leasehold nature.

The general house of the municipal corporation (MC) on Saturday approved an agenda to sell its commercial properties on leasehold through freehold.

The matter will be sent to the UT administration for formal approval to the conversion to dispose of the properties not being sold for past over a decade despite multiple attempts owing to their leasehold nature.

Sources said the administration has already taken a decision to convert leasehold properties of all its departments into freehold, making the civic body hopeful.

Around 200 commercial properties of the MC worth over Rs 200 crore are lying unsold. These include a hospital site in Manimajra, booths, shop-cum-flats (SCFs) and shops in Sector 17.

Also, there are over 105 booths in Mauli Jagran, 20 shop-cum-office sites in Manimajra, 40 booths in Sector 17 constructed under the over bridge, according to the records.

The lone private hospital site on 2.74 acres of land in Manimajra is worth Rs 81 crore. The authority has spent crores of rupees on the projects but nobody turned up for auctions.
