NMC’s private operator starts collecting construction waste

The operator — Hyderabad C&D Waste Pvt Ltd — has conducted a survey and started to lift C&D waste from areas in Laxmi Nagar Zone. The NMC has provided 5 acre land to the operator for setting up the recycling plant, storage etc.

The Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) private operator has started to collect and transport construction and demolition (C&D) waste dumped across the city to Bhandewadi dumping yard. The civic body has claimed the operator will establish and commission recycling plant by end of December.

The operator — Hyderabad C&D Waste Pvt Ltd — has conducted a survey and started to lift C&D waste from areas in Laxmi Nagar Zone. The NMC has provided 5 acre land to the operator for setting up the recycling plant, storage etc.

This would be the first time in the history of the city that the civic body will recycle C&D waste, once the plant is set up and commissioned.

NMC has estimated that the city generates around 200 metric tonne C&D everyday. The operator will lift and transport C&D waste from residential areas without any charges. The operator has been given powers to charge in case of commercial establishments handing over C&D waste.

The operator will have to launch a helpline number on which citizens can call and hand over C&D waste. The operator will manufacture sand, paver blocks, sculptures, road-divider materials, bricks, gravel and similar materials for recovery of his investment, and also operation and maintenance cost. The civic body will pay Rs414 per metric tonne to operator, which is likely to come to around Rs20 lakh per month.

Kanak Resources Management Limited was allowed to collect and transport C&D waste to Bhandewadi dumping yard. At that time, there was no infrastructure for recycling, so the operator used to mix or dump it at dumping yard.

The civic body had appointed two new operators from November 2019, but did not allow them to lift C&D waste.
