L&T Construction’s Heavy Civil Infrastructure business has secured an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) from the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHRCL) to construct India’s first high-speed rail corridor.
The company has classified the order as ‘mega’ contract, which is valued at more than INR70bn ($944m).
The contract to build the 237.1km stretch MAHSR – C4 package is claimed to be the biggest EPC contract awarded in the country to date and is the first of its kind project with a mandate to construct.
The construction firm said that the MAHSR – C4 package is part of the Mumbai Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Project.
The scope of the project will involve the construction of viaducts, stations, major river bridges, depots and other auxiliary works.
Nearly 508km Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project is also called as the MAHSR Bullet Train project.
The project will include 155.76km in Maharashtra State, 4.3kms in the Union Territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli and 348.04kms in Gujarat with 12 stations along the route.
Upon completion, the High-Speed Rail project will operate at a speed of 320kmph and will cover the complete distance in around two hours with limited stops and in three hours with all stops.
The construction company said that the C4 package represents about 46.6% of the total length and makes it the longest amongst all the packages.
It runs from Zaroli Village on the Maharashtra – Gujarat border to Vadodara Station through 4 stations at Vapi, Bilimora, Surat and Bharuch in Gujarat.
L&T Construction CEO and managing director S N Subrahmanyan said: “At a time of grave uncertainty during the time of the pandemic, the award of such a huge infrastructure order augurs very well not just for the construction industry but for the entire infrastructure sector as well.”
