Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw today virtually observed the final breakthrough of a 1.5-km-long mountain tunnel for the Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train project in Maharashtra’s Palghar district.

This tunnel, situated between the Virar and Boisar bullet train stations, ranks among the longest mountain tunnels in the district and signifies a crucial construction milestone. As per the Railway Ministry, this represents the second tunnel breakthrough in Maharashtra, following the completion of the five-km underground tunnel connecting Thane and the Bandra Kurla Complex in September 2025.

The 508-km Mumbai–Ahmedabad High Speed Rail corridor traverses Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. It is India’s sole high-speed rail initiative designed for bullet trains capable of operating at speeds of up to 320 kmph, thereby reducing the travel duration between the two cities to approximately two hours and 17 minutes.

The project is being executed with both technical and financial assistance from the Japanese government, showcasing international collaboration in the advancement of India’s infrastructure.
