The civic administration is expected to be ready with the construction debris treatment plant at Wagholi by next month, paving the way for scientific debris for such waste.
The facility coming up on 2-acre plot will have a capacity to process at least 200 MT of construction debris every day. “Considering the progress so far, the work is expected to get over in the next few weeks. The facility will begin functioning at full capacity by January 2020. Once operational, it will help bring down open dumping of debris,” an official of the civic solid waste department said.
The treatment of waste will generate bricks and other construction material, which can be reused at construction sites. The setting up of the plant was expedited in last couple of months. “The administration had set a target to complete the civil work and installation of machinery at the plant by December,” the official said.
As per the estimates of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), the city generates about 200-250 MT of construction and demolition waste every day.
Dnyaneshwar Molak, the head of PMC’s solid waste department, said the administration had appointed an already agency to collect the waste. “The agency will be responsible for carrying the construction waste to the site once the facility becomes operational,” he said, adding that the rates for waste transportation had been fixed.
“The facility will also process the construction waste of the developers. We will chalk out a comprehensive plan to see that dumping of construction waste is totally stopped once the plant is operational,” Molak added.
