Tripura’s 1st high-rise seismic resistant building nears completion

Tripura is set to achieve a significant infrastructural advancement with the development of a modern G+14 administrative building in Gurkhabasti, Agartala. This will be the first high-rise government office complex in the state, integrating cutting-edge earthquake-resistant technology and green building standards.

Kiran Gitte, Secretary of the Public Works Department, announced that the building has been awarded a four-star rating for its green building safety features. “Tripura is located in Zone 5, and this structure includes a pendulum-based base isolator capable of enduring earthquakes with a magnitude of up to 8.8. This base isolator was designed and tested in the United States, with significant contributions from IIT Mumbai in its implementation,” he stated.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha told that the main purpose of constructing this G+14 building using advanced technology is to bring all the directorate offices of the Tripura government into one place.

I am extremely pleased, as such a structure has never been built in Tripura before. In India, there are only one or two comparable buildings located in cities like Delhi and other major urban centers.Tripura falls under Seismic Zone 5, and recently, there was an earthquake in Myanmar that measured 8.2 on the Richter scale, causing significant damage, as many of you have seen,” the Chief Minister said.

The main aim of this G+14 building, utilizing advanced technology, is to gather all the directorate offices of the Tripura government in one place. This will optimize space and eliminate the necessity for individuals to visit various locations for official matters—everything will be accessible within a single building,” he further explained.

The project, valued at Rs133.89 crore, is being carried out by the Public Works Department (PWD) of the Government of Tripura and executed by Engineering Projects (India) Ltd. (EPI). It aims to revolutionize the administrative framework by consolidating multiple government directorates under one roof, thereby improving efficiency and minimizing travel inconveniences for both officials and citizens. The foundation stone was laid in January 2023, and construction is advancing well, with the foundation work and installation of seismic isolators completed. The building is anticipated to be fully operational by December 2026.

This modern structure is Northeast India’s first building with base isolation technology, a feature found in only a handful of buildings across India. The pendulum-based isolator system, manufactured by Earthquake Protection System (EPS), California, USA, reduces seismic forces by allowing controlled movement during earthquakes.
