TN Govt writes off tenants rental dues to local bodies

“Rent payable for the lock down period from June 2020 to August 2020 (first wave) and from May 2021 to June 2021 (second wave) by lessees of urban local bodies including Chennai Corporation and other corporations, municipalities and town panchayats will be waived,” the state told Madras high court.

 Tamil Nadu government has decided to waive ₹136 crore of rental dues payable by tenants to various local bodies across the state for the Covid lockdown period.“Rent payable for the lock down period from June 2020 to August 2020 (first wave) and from May 2021 to June 2021 (second wave) by lessees of urban local bodies including Chennai Corporation and other corporations, municipalities and town panchayats will be waived,” the state told Madras high court.

The benefit will be extended to only those tenants who do not have arrears to the local bodies and the state will not bear the waiver amount in any circumstances, the state added.The submissions were made on a contempt plea moved by trader M Ponnusamy who wanted the Namakkal Municipality to waive his rental due for Covid lockdown period.
