The long-pending demand for an AC Volvo bus service from the city to Mangaluru International Airport (MIA), is expected to fulfilled in a fortnight. KSRTC Mangaluru division has received four low-floor Volvo buses from Mysuru division, to start the service.
Rajesh Shetty, divisional controller, KSRTC, Mangaluru, said, “We are now waiting for permission from the deputy commissioner and MIA, to start the service. The buses have arrived. We have written to the airport officials, to arrange for facilities, including free parking space,” he said.
KSRTC will seek a four-month temporary permit from the district administration. “We will request for a permanent permit, only after observing the demand for the service. In 2011, the bus service was launched, but had to be discontinued due to lack of demand,” he said.
“The starting point for the bus service in the city will be Mangaladevi, Ullal and Kinnigoli. A recent survey revealed that a significant number of air passengers travel from Kinnigoli and Ullal to MIA. The buses from Mangaladevi will pass through Nanthur, on their way to MIA. While returning, it will pass through Dr BR Ambedkar Circle, RTO Circle , Attavar and Mangaldevi. The bus from Kinnigoli will travel through Kateel to MIA, and bus from Ullal will reach MIA via Pumpwell-Kankanady,” said Shetty.
Depending on the route, the tickets are expected to cost around Rs 100 to Rs 150. There is also a proposal to offer bus tickets along with airline tickets. “The final rates will be fixed, after getting permission from the deputy commissioner,” Shetty said. Taxis plying to MIA charge about Rs 600 for a drop. KSRTC has sought the help of MIA officials to promote the bus service among fliers.
