Three Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) MLAs met Union minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi on Tuesday and urged him to convert the Thoppur ghat section of the Salem-Bengaluru National Highway into a six-lane road.

R Arul (Salem west), S Sadhasivam (Mettur) and S P Venkateswaran (Dharmapuri) met the Union minister.

Arul said based on the directions of PMK president Dr Anbumani Ramadoss, they had gone to New Delhi to meet Gadkari.

“We explained to the Union minister the importance of making the Thoppur ghat section into a six-way lane road. It is a four-way lane road now,” he said.

The MLA said the Thoppur ghat section has been called the ‘death trap’ by motorists as 244 people died in accidents in this stretch over a decade.

They urged the Union minister to construct two bridges to regulate traffic congestion at Seelanaickenpatty and Mamangam areas in Salem.

“The Union minister heard all our demands patiently and assured that he will look into them at the earliest,” Arul said.
