The Dehradun Municipal Corporation has sent notices to 82 government departments for failing to pay property taxes and has given them a month’s time to submit necessary documents. DMC is in the process of identifying tax defaulters and had sent notices to individuals as well earlier this month.
Few government departments had also been notified a couple of months ago. On Tuesday, the civic agency sent fresh notices to these departments.
Among the major defaulters that have been identified so far are State Infrastructure and Industrial Development Corporation Uttarakhand Limited, some offices of the postal department, telephone department, Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited, sub-station survey estate Rajpur road, chief conservator forest office, transport department offices, district development office, LIC building and income tax commissioner office.
Confirming the same, Dharmesh Panauli, tax superintendent, DMC said, “These departments have been sent notices and given a month’s time to submit the necessary documents. Once the documents are in, their tax dues will be calculated and details will be shared with them.”
Officials said that failure to comply can also lead to DMC sealing the respective offices. “In most cases the departments comply but failure to do so can lead to sealing, especially a state department building and then the matter moves to court,” said Panauli.
The total tax amount is not known yet but officials suspect that the figure could go upto crores. A senior official said that while individuals are submitting their taxes, government departments are failing to do so. Due to this, load is increasing on the civic body.
