NMC to start infra projects for Kumbh 2027 in April

With just two years left for the 2027 Kumbh Mela to be held in Nashik, the civic body is planning to start major infrastructural works, which will require two years for completion, from April this year.

TheĀ Nashik Municipal CorporationĀ (NMC) has prepared a Rs 7,500 crore plan for the Kumbh Mela that has been submitted to state govt for approval. This plan includes many major works, including construction of bridges, STPs, and the acquisition of land for Sadhugram, that will require at least two years for completion.

The NMC has proposed construction of nine bridges, including five bridges on the Godavari River and the remaining four on its tributaries in view of the Kumbh Mela.Initially, the NMC is planning to start the tender process for the construction of two bridges on the Godavari — one parallel to the existing bridge near Laxminarayan Temple and another parallel to the existing one at Ramwadi.

Municipal commissioner Manisha Khatri has also made a financial provision of Rs 46 crore for these two proposed bridges in the budget of the civic body for the 2025-26 fiscal.

Overall, the NMC has made a financial provision of Rs 400 crore as part of its contribution of 25% of the total funds for the Kumbh Mela, in the budgets of the current and next fiscal year.

Moreover, the process of acquisition of over 250 acres is to be started for Sadhugram. Construction for the two proposed Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) at Makhmalabad and Kamatwada in the city is also expected to start immediately as it will require over two years to complete the project.

Khatri, while talking to TOI, said they are planning to start the major works related to Kumbh Mela from April this year. “The proposal to start these works immediately is to be submitted for the approval of chief minister Devendra Fadnavis during the Kumbh Mela meeting that is expected to be held in Mumbai shortly,” she said.
