The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has achieved its highest property tax collection to date, surpassing Rs 2,700 crore by December 31 in the financial year 2025-26. This figure represents an increase of approximately 45 percent compared to collections during the same timeframe last year, as reported by officials on Saturday.

According to officials, this growth has been accompanied by a significant rise in the number of taxpayers. The total number of registered property taxpayers has increased from 10.31 lakh in 2024-25 to 12.43 lakh this year, marking an increase of nearly 21 percent.

Civic officials have attributed this rise to a combination of taxpayer outreach efforts, stricter enforcement, and the response to the tax amnesty scheme, SUNIYO, which was introduced for the 2025-26 financial year. Under this scheme, property owners can have interest and penalties waived if they pay the current year’s tax along with any dues from the previous five years,” an official statement indicated.

Officials noted that the scheme has encouraged many property owners who previously filed incorrect tax returns or paid lower amounts to regularize their dues. It has also attracted those who had only occasionally paid taxes in prior years. By December 31, approximately 1.70 lakh taxpayers had taken advantage of the SUNIYO scheme, contributing around Rs 933 crore.

This amount included Rs 320 crore from nearly 91,000 new taxpayers who were brought into the tax system, according to the statement. Despite this positive response, the corporation reported that over six lakh registered taxpayers have either underpaid or failed to pay property tax and have yet to utilize the scheme.

The MCD has urged these individuals to settle their dues, warning that enforcement actions under the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1957, will be initiated once the scheme concludes. The SUNIYO scheme has now been extended until January 31, 2026, with a 5 percent penalty. Payments can be processed through the MCD’s property tax portal, as stated by the corporation.
