Delhi govt. sets 8-month deadline for Barapullah Phase-III project

The Delhi government has established an eight-month timeline to finalize the long-overdue Barapullah Phase-III project, following the ultimate tree-related approval from the Supreme Court-appointed central empowered committee.

The elevated corridor is designed to connect Mayur Vihar-I in east Delhi with AIIMS in south Delhi, linking to the existing flyover near Sarai Kale Khan. Officials anticipate that the 3.5-km corridor will alleviate east-west traffic, thereby reducing congestion on NH-24, DND Flyway, and Ring Road.

Work has commenced with fabrication sites prepared and tree removal tenders issued, under the supervision of the forest department. A comprehensive tree survey indicated that 85 trees will be removed, 87 will be transplanted, and 161 will be preserved through pruning across various divisions.

Initially launched in 2015 and scheduled for completion by October 2017, the project has encountered delays due to land acquisition, clearances, flooding, and coordination challenges. The corridor incorporates environmental protections, including pier-supported structures and extradosed bridges, three lanes in each direction, cycle tracks, and eight loops to facilitate smoother connectivity.
