Coimbatore police to launch software for mansions, hostels

Police commissioner V Balakrishnan said people staying in such facilities do not have to visit police stations.

The city police will launch a software for uploading details of people who are staying at service apartments, mansions and lodges.

Police commissioner V Balakrishnan said people staying in such facilities do not have to visit police stations. “They have to upload their details in the software and the station house officer in the respective police station would view the documents,” he said during a meeting with members of resident welfare associations, service apartments, mansions, lodges, and hostels on Tuesday.

Addressing the gathering, Balakrishnan said the purpose of the meeting was to improve the security in the residential areas. “We have introduced neighbourhood police, and cops are advised to visit the allotted residential welfare associations on weekends and residents can state their problems to them.”

“All the mansions, apartments and hostels should install CCTV cameras. Many apartment associations have internal issues and should be sorted by dialogues. If the issues are not solved, the respective associations can approach us,” said Balakrishnan.

One of the participants from the Coimbatore Hostel Owners’ Association said hostels have been following the guidelines issued by the government. But they cannot control youngsters who go out of their rooms after 10pm. “Some of them are taking drugs at Saravanampatti areas and the hostel owners were not able to control them.”

The commissioner replied that the city police won’t do moral policing. “We cannot tell students that they cannot go out of their room after 10pm. If they are involved in any unlawful activities or were using drugs, hostel owners should inform us,” said Balakrishnan.

The commissioner said police have installed pedestrian-operated signals at Gandhipuram. “We have identified 15 more places in the city to install such signals to make busy streets pedestrian-friendly.”

Deputy commissioners of police G Chandeesh, K Shanmugam and Mathivanan participated in the meeting.
