BMC collects Rs 4 lakh property tax on first day of doorstep drive

The civic body will hold the drive in different wards in rotation every Saturday, with special focus on the areas in Rajarhat, where tax payers will be able to clear their doubts about the tax amounts, get bills and pay the tax on spot.

The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) collected nearly Rs 4 lakh by holding a tax camp at wards 18 and 19 — Baguiati and its adjacent areas — on Saturday when the civic body’s doorstep property tax collection drive began.

The civic body will hold the drive in different wards in rotation every Saturday, with special focus on the areas in Rajarhat, where tax payers will be able to clear their doubts about the tax amounts, get bills and pay the tax on spot.

“Many tax payers, residing in wards 18 and 19, visited the camp on Saturday when Rs 3.9 lakh of property tax — both pending and current —was collected. This doorstep property tax drive will be conducted on every Saturday in two wards simultaneously,” said a BMC valuation and assessment department official.

A proposal is being placed to give a certain percentage of rebate to those who will pay their property tax online within the stipulated time. “This is to encourage the tax payers to use the online mode of payment,” said the official.

The civic body has decided to impose 10% penalty on the pending tax amount, which will be recovered as arrears, from the defaulters. The civic body is sending the revised property tax bills to Salt Lake households for the four quarters of 2022-23 financial year in new tax rates based on the old valuation.

The civic authorities are also planning to start holding e-mutation camps.
