BBMP to begin survey of under-construction buildings

Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will begin a survey of all under-construction buildings in the city from Monday to ensure there is no violation of sanctioned plans. The move follows the collapse of an under-construction building at Babusapalya near Hennur last week in which nine people were killed.

Tushar Giri Nath, the BBMP chief commissioner, said on Sunday BBMP will conduct the survey as directed by deputy chief minister D K Shivakumar. “We will stop the construction work if we find any illegalities and issue demolition orders,” Nath said.

He added that 70 staffers doing Khata-related work will be deployed to conduct surveys of all the under-construction buildings in the city.According to BBMP sources, in the Babusapalya incident, the property owner allegedly flouted the approved building plan and constructed additional floors. Similar violations might have happened at other under-construction buildings as well. So, officers from the revenue wing will inspect such buildings and if they find additional structures or floors built in violation of the sanctioned plan, then property owners will be told to demolish those.

Property owners will have to bear the cost of all such demolition work.

Additionally, BBMP will check the quality of construction. Property owners will be required to demolish the buildings if they are found to have used substandard materials or if there is an engineering or design flaw that poses a threat to public safety.

Apart from this, BBMP will also check for constructions undertaken on encroached land. “We will take action if we find any construction on encroached lake or on rajakaluves in the city,” a BBMP officer said.
