Houses under PMAY to be completed within a year

Houses under PMAY to be completed by early next year, which is two years before its scheduled deadline of 2022. The total number of houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) is 1.12 crores as has been confirmed by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.

The committee for monitoring and sanctioning of projects under ‘Housing for All’, which is chaired by MoHUA secretary, has so far sanctioned 84 lakh housing units. Around 24 lakh houses have been delivered and work has begun on another 48-50 lakh units, housing and urban development minister Hardeep Singh Puri said at the National Real Estate Development Council’s national convention.

Puri said that the 2022 target of a pucca home with basic facilities in the name of lady of every household in the country will be achieved two years in advance. The government had earlier calculated 1 crore houses till 2022, but it later revised out assessment and revised the target to 1.12 crore houses.

The government will also roll out 50 smart cities by December 2019, he added.

In relation to rental housing policy the minister said that the MoHUA has held consultations with the states, during which some concerns have been expressed, but several positive suggestions too have come up.

Puri further said that they are in the process of streamlining RERA procedures further. But by and large, the regulator has come to be accepted by all stakeholders, he added.
