For the first time in the history of Railways, two Mumbai stations are set to become India’s first ‘Eat Right Stations’. The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Mumbai Central railway stations may become the first of its kind stations to be approved by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) for its Eat Right initiative.

Accordingly, the food quality regulator along with Central Railway, Western Railway, and Indian Railways Catering Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) will train the employees and then certify and rate the quality of food served at the two stations.

‘Eat Right Station’ is part of the ‘Eat Right India’ movement, which was launched in 2018 by the FSSAI. It focusses on improving the health and well-being of people through healthy dietary habits.

The project will be conducted in three stages; first of all, a pre-audit of the food will be undertaken which means the food that is currently being prepared and served will be inspected. The recommendations will then be shared with CR and WR, depending on the railway station.

Later, FSSAI will provide necessary training to the food handlers along with those preparing it. At last, a final audit of the station will be conducted and accordingly, the FSSAI will issue ratings and certification to the railway stations.

Meanwhile, FSSAI has already conducted a pre-audit of Mumbai Central, where around 21 food stalls were inspected.
