Citizens who do not agree with the civic body’s assessment of their property tax can now appeal for a reassessment.
A web page will be launched by the civic body to accept requests from citizens for a reassessment of the carpet area of their respective properties. The launch of the facility will be soon announced claim Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) officials.
When asked how much time it will take AMC to solve such queries, AMC standing committee chairman, Amul Bhatt, replied , “It will take 30 to 35 days for a zonal officer to visit a premise, prepare a report to verify claims and then proceed with making changes in the tax bills.”
He added, “A number of disputes over reassessment has reached civil courts. The whole idea of bringing in the carpet area based tax formula was minimising such litigations. But here too we find there is a conflict between our property tax office and individual property owners.”
It was in May 2014 that the then municipal commissioner Guruprasad Mohapatra had announced introducing a system of e-assessment for filing property tax.
The scheme failed to take off after Mohapatra was transferred out of the civic body. The e-assessment system is followed in Bengaluru civic body.
